And I'm happy to see/read the other points of view on this.

Discussion: Moving from Volunteer Umpires to Paid Umpires in our recreational yet competitive Senior Softball League

Greetings!

We're a 208 Player/Member League with guys aged 50 to 92. We've always used our own Players to Ump (who volunteer on nights they don't have games) but many of the guys want us to move to using paid umpires.

As a Board Member entrusted with looking after the integrity of the league, I have concerns about the method that is being proposed to pay the Umpires.

I assume some of you might not be too eager to jump in and comment on this topic, but I'm hoping some of you will !!

Can you offer any advice to a league looking to make this change?

Have you ever heard of leagues getting "in trouble" for failure to issue the appropriate tax form to the Umps at the end of the year?

Thank you in advance!

Ted

Looking at the Official SSUSA Rulebook

SECTION 7 - Batting

7.1 Batting Order

D. The first batter in each inning shall be the batter whose name follows that
of the last player who completed his turn at bat in the preceding inning.

EFFECT - §7.1 B-D: EXCEPT FOR A WRONG BATTER AT BAT, batting out of order
is an appeal play that may be made only by the defensive team. The
defensive team forfeits its right to appeal batting out of order when one legal
or illegal pitch has been made to the following batter, or when the pitcher
and all infielders have clearly vacated their normal fielding positions and
have left fair territory on their way to the bench or dugout.

Can anyone tell me what "EXCEPT FOR A WRONG BATTER AT BAT" means? A bunch of us are scratching our heads! :-)

Thank you in advance !!
