Discussion: SAFE or OUT

I had a play today the batter beat out an infield hit but never touched any part of the safety bag, he actually ran over the top without touching it. I called the runner safe because runners are assumed to have touched the bag they are advancing to. The runner returned to the bag and the pitcher then began questioning whether he touched the bag and I told him it was to late for an appeal because the runner had already returned. The Mgr. came out and said per the rule it states that if there is a play on a batter-runner going to first base, the batter-runner MUST touch some portion of the double bag extending into foul territory. He will be called out if he fails to do so, except if, in the umpire's judgment, the batter-runner is avoiding a collision.
I didn't change my call and I still believe I was correct, but the Mgr. was also correct in his argument with the wording of the rule.

So was runner safe or out for not touching some part of the safety bag when a play was being made on him?

Discussion: the catch rule??

I had this in a recent game, the batter hits a ground ball to the SS who makes a throw that is low and in the dirt. The 1st baseman tries to scoop it up but the ball rolls up his arm and he ends up catching it in his arm pit. The runner was slow and the 1st baseman had time to reach over and grab the ball with his bare hand before the runner reached 1st. I called the runner out. The Mgr. compalined that it was an illegal catch since he didn't actually catch the ball with his glove or his bare hand. I stuck with my call and it didn't make a difference in the game. After the game the Mgr. showed me the rule and now I don't know if I made the correct call? I posted the end of rule 1.10 below and I guess per the rule the Mgr. was right, he actually ended up catching it with his arm pit and then showed control when he reached across and grabbed it? What if an OF slides to catch a fly ball and catches it in his stomach area then grasps it, is that an out?

I looked up the ASA rule and they give an expalnation of what a fielder has to do to make a legal catch, that rule is also below. SSUSA's rule just tells you that it's an illegal catch?

SSUSA RULE
An illegally caught ball occurs when a fielder catches a batted or thrown ball with anything other than his hand(s) or glove in its proper place

ASA RULE
CATCH/NO CATCH:
A. A catch is a legally caught ball, which occurs when the fielder catches a batted, pitched or thrown ball with the hand(s) or glove/mitt.
1. To establish a valid catch, the fielder shall hold the ball long enough to prove control of it and/or that the release of the ball is voluntary.
2. If the ball is merely held in the fielder’s arm(s) or prevented from dropping to the ground by some part of the fielder’s body, equipment or clothing, the catch is not completed until the ball is in the grasp of the fielder’s hand(s) or glove.

Discussion: ssusa rule 7.6

Does ssusa have a written definition of what they consider a full swing?

We play in a league that has a little left-handed hitter who stands at the front of the batters box and just slaps the ball over the third baseman’s head, in reality his swing is actually a third of a swing.
Is that type of a swing actually legal?
I have read rule 7.6 E and it does not explain what is actually considered to be a full swing.

Discussion: illegal courtesy runner

we had this come up in league play the other day

bases loaded 2 outs 2 runs in, a long inning, B/R on 1st asked for a CR,
the runner coming in was acknowledged by the umpire, the next batter up hits a double 2 runs score and CR ends up on 3rd, the 3B now remembers that the CR had batted earlier in the inning and got a CR making him an illegal CR, the umpire checks his scorecard and admits he missed the call which would have been the 3rd out, do the runs score? I know it was an appeal play and the runs had scored before the appeal but the CR should have been called out by the umpire upon touching 1B and it would have been the end of the inning

Discussion: You make the call

what if it was the same scenario but there were 2 outs Runner at third scores. Runner at second is thrown out at home. On the throw home the batter takes second. Next batter comes up. Before the first pitch the pitcher appeals the batter didn’t touch first base. Umpire calls him out.
Does the run count?

Discussion: missed Infield fly call

Hi all, This is my first time posting and a new member. This a local league game and we use SSUSA rules. I just started umpiring a few months ago and we had a situation come up, I asked our UIC in the area and he told me he wasn't sure of the answer and hasn't been able to get any information. Then he sent me this web-site and suggested I try submitting it here.
Infield fly rule, There were runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs a fly ball was hit to the SS, I guess we both missed the situation and we didn't call infield fly. The SS is standing underneath the ball but misses the catch, both of the runners now think they are forced to advance. The runner who was on 2nd was forced out going to 3B, runner on 1st advanced to 2B, and the batter ended up on 1B.
After the play the defense asks why IF wasn't called, I know it can be called after the play to correct our missed call. We got together and both agreed it was an IF situation so we called the batter out

What do we do with the runners?
Do we send them both back or do they stay advanced?
If they stay advanced is the runner from 3rd now safe because it would have been a tag play and he was called out on a supposed force play?
