Discussion: Today's "super" bats

Has anybody see a well hit line drive come straight at them?
I have and I play outfield!

Has anybody seen a well hit line drive "Rock" ball come straight at them?
I have....
And as the "Rock" ball was coming at me, I could see the ball change it's shape and came at me much like a "whiffle" or "knuckle ball" moving up/down and left/right as much as 3-5 feet. The ball's outer cover seperates from the ball to make the ball fly like a ball that has a serious cut or groove in it. I'm sure all you fielders have seen the erratic flight of the "Rock" ball and may even have been hit by it. Lower performance bats will not change the flight characteristics of a well hit line drive ball that deforms or changes shape in flight.

Discussion: What Became of 30+ Ounce Bats?

fennellwg, so if I understand you correctly. If I were to buy a 30 ounce senior bat and put 1 or 2 knob cuffs on it, making the total bat weight about 31 ounces. This will make that bats BPF exceed 1.21?

fennellwg:
I think you have very good knowledge about bats and such. I have a question for you. I know this is not exactly in line with this thread. Anyway, I have notice several guys buying the Adidas 12" Melee 2 in the 30 ounce version. They all agree that they are getting better results than with the lighter versions of the same model. Do you think that the there may be a better performance combination for different weight/end load for that bat over others of the same model?

Sorry!

But I don't see any difference in the performance of this years bat over last years bat.
How about doing a Head to Head comparison of the bats? Maybe then I can have a good reason to get the new bat.

Discussion: The "ROCK SOFTBALL"

When the Rock Softball is hit on a hard line drive. The soft, spongy cover of the ball seems to warp, slightly changing the shape of the ball. This warpping may not be much but is just enough for the flight of the ball to become erratic or unstable. This is like MLB pitchers cutting the ball with their belt buckle or other sharp object changing flight characterisitcs.

Discussion: The "ROCK SOFTBALL"

curveball
This just happened to me Thusrsday morning at pregame BP. I was about 50' feet in the outfield grass behind where the short stop would normally be. 70+ year old Nat was hitting with his Louisville Slugger senior bat. The balls being pitched were used Trump Rocks. Some older and some newer. Anyway he hit a hard line drive at me. I saw the ball coming at me like most any other line drives. When the ball was about 15-20 feet from me it started to move left and right and up and down as it was closeing in on me. The ball was jumping all over the place like a knuckle or whiffle ball. It was moving so much I was not able to catch it or get out of the way. I would estamate the ball was jumping 2-5 feet in all directions as it was coming toward me. The ball hit me in left chest below my arm pit. Nat and most of the other guys on the field noticed the ball movement. Right now my chest is still sore from the hit.
While this does not happen often, this is not the first time I have noticed unexpected movement from the Rock ball. What I have observed is that the movement mostly occurs on hard hit line drives. Also it seems the movement gets more radical after it clears the infield. The make and model of the bat used makes no difference as I have noticed unusal movement several years ago. Every now and then when I hit the ball it will move. Some observations I have heard and seen is that the ball can sometimes move as much as 8-10 feet. I like the Rock Ball but it can be dangerous when hit just right. Maybe it's just a rare occurance hit on the stitches or something to makes it fly different.

I DON'T GET IT!!!

I have watched your video's on several different bats.
Each time I see you swinging different model bats and getting approximately the same distances or results.

Same Batter + Different Bat = Little or no change in distance/results

How can I see any real difference in the performance of the various bats?

My team took BP with that bat...
Nobody was very impressed with it.
Most guys put it down after about 4-5 hits.
Also noticed other teams let the bats just set in the dugouts using other bats during tournament play.

Discussion: Lower back problems

I have had 2 Epidural Steroid Injections...They made me feel good for about 1.5-2 months...After 2nd injection I was told that further injections won't do much good...I have arthritis in my spine pinching my sciatic nerve..Tried acupuncture and chiropractor with only short term pain relieve..Inversion table helps but it also is only temporary...Now I have to do lots of body core stretches and exercises...It helps a lot but the pain will never totally go away...Running and lifting weights over my head inflames the spine and pinches the nerve bringing on pain in my lower back and right leg. There is a verity of reasons and causes for back pain.
