| June 17, 2025 JAB | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Runner hit by line drive while standing on 1st base Happened to me at last Winter Nationals. Runner on first, I hit a fair line drive that hit runner who had both feet on first base bag. We had a single ump; he ruled that ball was in play and resulted in a double play!! After game, I asked senior SSUSA umpire there ( I believe she was also the site director) about it. She said our ump made a bad call. She said correct call should have been: dead ball, runner advances to second, and batter gets first. After the tournament, I put this situation on this message forum. It was confirmed that the senior umpire/site director was correct-dead ball, runner to second, batter to first. The key I think was that runner was hit while standing on the bag. Hope this helps |

| May 25, 2025 JAB | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Hip replacement I had both hips and L knee totally replaced over a four month period in 2015. I have constantly played over past decade. Play at 100% again? I didn't. I was 69 at time of surgery. Most obvious and immediate change is running gait/stride-it changed and my speed dropped. And there will be pain that you'll have to manage. I was a career Marine, marathoner, and tri athlete and had much experience running. But the three surgeries modified my stride and reduced my speed. I chipped a bone in hip during a marathon in 2010 and that started my path to replacement surgery. I made the "surgery decision" when pain reached the point that softball/gym visits was no longer fun. Good news is I've had a very successful softball journey since 2015. Three Florida State championships, two World Masters titles, one National championship, one Triple crown, and two Gold medals from Huntsman Senior games. Plus too many SSUSA and ISSA tournament victories (29 rings). Good luck w/your decision. It won't be an easy one but, for me, NO REGRETS joe 321 412 8087 |
| April 29, 2025 JAB | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Field Assignments during World Masters in Vegas For the staff: Historically, do field assignments during the World Masters in Vegas have an Age Component? For example-do the Men's 80 competition usually take place at same field complex year after year? Thank you |
| Feb. 21, 2025 JAB | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Team and individual players ratings Staff: thank you. That's why I directed it to you. Lots of players "know" the answer but only one answer counts and that's your answer! If our luck continues and we run the tables in Vegas, expect a call from Bulldog in early Oct. |
| Feb. 20, 2025 JAB | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Team and individual players ratings For the staff. I started a new team for 2025 season. I recruited one Major+, eight Majors, and five AAA players. During Aug/Sep 2024 SSUSA verified these individual ratings and assigned us a team rating of Major. Lets say we get lucky and run the tables and win Vegas. What month will you elevate the team rating to Major+? What month will the individual players have their ratings elevated? Will the five AAA players individual rating also be elevated to Major+? Thank you |
| Feb. 18, 2025 JAB | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Spring Nationals Lakeland FL For the Staff: When will field assignments for Spring Nationals Lakeland FL be made. The two listed complex are approx 30 min drive from each other. Cost of rooms in Lakeland area in vicinity of $300+ per night this time of the year. So, we focus on hotels close to fields which offer two beds and sofa. But, one of your two "tournament hotels" stopped taking reservations (two beds/sofa for a reasonable price) last week! Any help with field assignments would be appreciated I play 80 ball. I need my sleep and to watch my expenditures so I can keep playing!! Common sense response with bat testing. Thank you |

| Nov. 19, 2024 JAB | Topic: Players looking to join a team Discussion: Men's 80 interest. I have an 80 Major team looking for an outfielder who is at least 80 years old. We can draw 80 yrs old players from across the country. For the reminder of 2025 softball year, we'll only play Eastern Nationals in late July (Northern VA), Vegas, and Huntsman. Plus, a Vegas qualifier will be required Currently, we plan to play Spring Nationals ( probably mid Mar in Central Florida, probably Lakeland) as our final Vegas qualifier. 2025 official SSUSA schedule should be published in next few weeks. Last week, we won Winter Nationals in Ft Myers FL playing as the only 80 team in a 75 bracket against Major and several AAA teams. Undefeated. We play a limited but very focused tournament schedule. Our intent is to compete only against best 80 teams in country. Team members are then able to compete with their regular local teams at other times. Call/text Joe 321 412 8087 |

| Nov. 15, 2024 JAB | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Interference? This is a little different but, I believe still an "interference" issue. Occurred last week at Winter Nationals in Ft Myers. Situation: one out, man on first, L handed pull hitter at plate. Runner standing with both feet on white bag (he knows the batter!), batter smokes a one hopper down the line in fair territory which hits runner who keeps both feet on white bag when hit. Ball continues towards outfield in fair territory. NO call from single ump behind plate. First baseman retrieves ball and runs towards first and tags white bag. Ump calls batter OUT. Meanwhile, runner decided to advance towards second. He was easily thrown out. Double play, inning over. After this game I discussed with senior SSUSA umpire on site. She said correct call should have been -when runner on first hit while on bag it became a dead ball and play stopped. Runner should have been awarded second and the batter awarded first. No outs should have been called and our rally allowed to continue, BUT ... |
| Aug. 15, 2024 JAB | Topic: Bats Discussion: failed bats Shaved/failed bats. My focus here is related to safety of infielders and not about an increase in distance a batted ball might travel using an illegal bat. Watched a UTube video where 3 identical bats (make, model, load, weight-26.5 oz, etc) were tested. Same swinger (not sure how old but my guess would be in his 40s). He took 6-7 swings with each bat. Bat 1 still in wrapper, Bat 2 had between 100-200 swings, Bat 3 shaved to 25 oz. Compression testing: Bat 1 approx 250, Bat 2 approx 240, Bat 3 approx 190. Demo was done at night and no one in video talked "distance" on any of the swings. They measured MPH off the bat. Bat 1-wrapper- most hits were in low to mid 90s (89-95); Bat 2 "100-200 hits" -most were mid to high 90 (93-101); Bat 3 "shaved to 25 oz"-most were 101- 111. Bat 3 had two at 110-111. The very lowest was 89 mph, and highest was 111 mph. I play 1st and 3rd base and the speed difference between 90s to over 111 is significant to me. Fortunately, I play on a 80 tournament team, and only play against a handful of players younger than 50 in pickup games. Speed difference of 20+ mph on 70 ft bases is going to leave a mark! Hope these numbers help |

I have been active with 70/75/and now 80 teams at major and major plus level. You look funny when you run but ... very doable. My advice: pre and post surgery workouts very impt. Good luck JAB |
