Discussion: Bullhead City "Fall Classic" Senior Softball Tournament

Greetings all, I was curious to see who attended the 2019 Bullhead City "Fall Classic" Senior Softball tournament last weekend? Their numbers appear to be slightly higher than in previous years? Anybody care to share their experiences good, bad or ugly?

Discussion: Spring Worlds Leaving Mesquite/St George?

Sorry Benji, you must be mistaking us with another event. The City of Kingman has never hosted a Senior Tournament in early Spring. We are not associated with the Bullhead City Tournaments that happen in Feb/Nov, if that is what you are thinking.

This will be a separate event hosted by SSUSA and we are looking forward to welcoming all of the teams and players to town.

The City of Kingman is thrilled to welcome teams to the 2019 Spring Worlds event! We are confident that players and teams will be pleased with our two multi-field complexes totaling 12 softball sized fields in all. We have three concessions stands, ample parking, tall mature trees, thick green grass and UNBEATABLE WEATHER at this time of year. Add this to our friendly and welcoming business environment, and we believe that we have the receipt or success!

Discussion: Long Time Senior SOftball Umpire Passes...

It is with sincere sorrow that we announce the passing of Steven J. Hite, a long time Senior Softball Umpire and educator from Arizona. Steve was instrumental in shaping the Bullhead City Senior Softball Tournament in Bullhead City AZ, and he worked a full game load for many years as the tournament grew. He was a great ambassador for the game, and just a heck if a nice guy. Steve was 70 years old.

Discussion: Was The ump

I have been a certified umpire for 22 years this Spring. If the Umpire made the correct 'infield-fly' call, then the batter was automatically out and the runners are entitled to advance AT THEIR OWN RISK. The dropped ball is totally irrelevant at that point where the umpire makes the infeld-fly-out call.

It is the responsibility of the players to know the rules and to play heads up ball. I see nothing unsportsmanlike about this situation.

Discussion: Good fielders/hitters for upcoming tournament in Sept.

Gentleman,it is with both disappointment and frustration that the City of Kingman has been forced to cancel our Route 66 Kingman Classic Senior Softball Tournament. Due to a massive mechanical failure of the City’s main water well, we have been unable to irrigate our fields for more than 3 weeks. This lack of water, combined with unseasonable 100+ degree temperatures degraded our softball and baseball fields and made them unsafe for play. Please understand that we are as disappointed as you must be at this unfortunate turn of events. Of course, all team registration fees will be refunded as quickly as possible. We expect this mechanical problem to be solved in the next couple of weeks, and our facilities to be back in back in their normal championship caliber state shortly thereafter.
We sincerely appreciate your interest in the City of Kingman’s Senior Softball program, and we vow that we will bounce back from this set back.

If you should have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call me at (928) 692-3113.

Discussion: Kingman

Teams have started to roll in for the 2017 Route 66 'Kingman Classic' Senior Softball Tournament, scheduled this September 8, 9 and 10 in Kingman, Arizona. There are a handful of well establish returning teams, but there has also been a grip of brand new throw-together teams. Since this is a Recreational Non Qualifier event, sometimes teams come up short handed. If you are a single who wants to get on a team, please send your contact info to the Tournament Director Ryan Fruhwirth a rfruhwirth@cityofkingman.gov. I will work to find a team at your ability level to compete with.

Discussion: An unspoken courtsey gesture...

As witnessed by an umpire in last night's adult slow pitch leagues...

Two veteran pitchers, long time friends and occasional team mates, face each other at the plate. Not a senior ballgame; each having younger team mates for this regular season match-up.

Both are excellent pitchers, some 130yrs experience between them. With that experience comes shared respect and courtesy, an honor neither would just 'grant' to the younger players on the opposing team.

A tense game, just one run between them. Runners on the corners, an out on the board. The gusts are forcing a higher number of walks than normal, an encounter both pitchers know well.

Finding himself behind in the count, and fearing the tying run at third, the pitcher lets the ball slip a little early on his release, sending what would have been a guaranteed walk to load the bases with a power hitter coming up next.

There was never a moment's hesitation from the batter. He knew he was going to swing at the outside pitch; the least he could offer as a courtesy to his fellow pitcher to avoid a walk. A slightly off balance swing accompanied by a dropped shoulder resulted in a chopped dribbler that rolled right at the pitcher.

A chorus of excited shouts from the infielders, echos of "turn-two" and "Roll it up!" The pitcher, on autopilot, stepped towards the slow-roller, made a clean scoop on the ball and without so much as a moments hesitation, returned the courtesy shown to him by his fellow pitcher. He throws a rainbow to first base, scoring the force out but deliberately not taking advantage of the easy double-play ball.

No words were spoken, nor were they needed. Uncommon respect, courtesy and sportsmanship between two veterans of the game. A great example that may be lost on players of a younger generation...

Discussion: Pay to play a quality tournament

Bullhead City runs two great Senior Tournaments per year. They are Recreational non-qualifiers and they usually get about 80 teams every Spring and Fall. They always tell you in advance whether or not it will be a 5 game guarantee or a 6 game guarantee. Of course it is impossible to satisfy everyone, but the organizers put a ton of effort into making sure that 'the little things' are attended to. They have maintained numbers in the 70-80 team range for the past 6 years, so I guess they are doing something right. I know that they have some new staff that are getting to know how the whole tournament runs, and the City of Bullhead just broke ground on three brand new ball diamonds at Rotary Park. If you aren't happy with the Seifman tournaments, why not give Bullhead a try?

Just curious SJV, what did you and your team think of this rule? Did it affect any of your games?

Discussion: Half Run Rule

It was my understanding that this rule was put in place because the BHC tournaments shared fields with Youth and Adult groups who had reservations at the end of each day. This rule ensured that there was never an extra inning game that screwed up the schedule. The teams LOVED the fact that there was no ambiguity as to when they would play. The 1/2 run option did add a new level of strategy to the coin toss...no longer did the winner of the toss simply chose HOME as a reflex...

As to poolshark's point about losing by a half run? It is no different than losing the championship game by a full run. If it looks like you are going to come up short? KEEP HITTING THE BALL!

The other aspect to consider here is that the Bullhead City Tournament were always for Recreation. There were no rings on the line, no equipment bundles up for grabs...I agree with SSUSA's comment that for Championship play, there is a potential to rob innings from teams, and nobody wants that.
