It seems like a legitimate question from my perspective. I was a senior in high school when the local temp was 118 and they postponed our football game to the next night (Sept, 1964). I was shocked that they did so but their concern was our health. I was playing 50s in August, 1997, in Palm Springs. At 2pm it was 112 (in the shade) and we still played... we theorized that the temp on the dirt was close to 130... Two different organizations, two different postures. BW |
| June 20, 2016 16wood | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Awards Rob, for the purposes of your question, you have to forget the SSUSA MVP awards... there not necessarily performance based as SSUSA Staff intimated at in their most recent post. If EVERY team receives one it cannot possibly be used for HOF nomination. Further, SSUSA does not provide a tournament MVP... i.e. one award for each division. SPA does provide an MVP award per division. It also provides 'x' amount of All Tourney Awards to a team, depending upon where they finish. It is possible for a player to earn both an AT award AND the MVP trophy but this is up to the discretion of the team. 'the way I've read it, a player in Major/Major+ with 4 All Tourney or All world in the SPA and SSUSA Masters Championships and 4 MVP's in SPA would only have 4 points' Based upon this scenario, you could conclude that he has 8 points... Don's insight is valuable because he sees what actually goes into the nomination or induction process. BW |
| June 18, 2016 16wood | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Awards Rob, as you know, the SSUSA/LVSSA Masters WC in LV provides an MVP Medallion to every team. The teams determine who earns it... they do not pick an MVP Award for the whole bracket or bracket winner. The medallion recipient cannot count it as a point (or 1/2 point). SPA has an MVP award for tourney winner... this does count as a point (1/2 pt). This may be the missing link in this dialogue. But my answer to your question (on how many points that player would earn) is 2. In SPA the MVP doesn't necessarily make All Tourney. We've awarded the AT AWARDS to players other than the MVP. SSUSA doesn't have an MVP award, as stated abov3, other than the medallion. BW |

Mark, only the All Tourney Award winners receive a point (or 1/2 point). No one gets a point for just participating in those events. Still, this is flawed in that the teams select the recipients themselves and not all of them do it on a merit basis. A point 'poorly earned' is still a point. BW |

It's true that the merger removed one more opportunity for HOF points. So did the loss of NSA,USSSA and SSWS. The HOF already has so many players in it that the honor is diminished. Perhaps now there are fewer chances the inductees will be in line with what HOF really means. This is just my opinion though... BW |

Point System Nomination Path Who is eligible? All nominees must be a minimum of 60 years old, have participated a minimum of 10 years in senior softball, and may begin earning nomination points at age 50. The following are the identified categories that are available for nominations: Player Players may earn the following points from playing in National or World Senior Tournaments. Major Plus & Major Classification 1 st Team All Tournament 1 Point AAA 1st Team All Tournament ½ Point A player must have a minimum of 8 total points to be considered for nomination. I do not read into it that the SSUSA/LVSSA World Masters Tourney doesn't count toward HOF points. Am I missing something? Does the word 'Masters' exclude it from HOF consideration? Bob Woodroof |
| June 7, 2016 16wood | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: What do you expect? Bruce, I like playing in SSUSA for most of the things you mentioned. I'm not really concerned about the type of awards we get. Patches, smatches... The downside for me is that, in general, we've supported SSUSA so much that it has driven the competition away (we = the senior teams in total, not just our team). File this in the 'be careful of what you wish for' category. Ten years ago there were 9 different senior associations... ASA, USSSA, NSA, ISSA, ISA (not affiliated with SSUSA at the time), SSWS, LVSSA, SPA and SSUSA. Many said that there too many and that this hurt us in terms of bracket size. Since then, NSA, SSWS and USSSA went away. Yes, I'm aware that the latter does hold an occasional event but it's a well kept secret and their model sucks, to be frank. SSUSA merged with (or consumed) LVSSA, which was one of our better world series each year. Bill Ruth, 50% partner of SSUSA, bought ISA and are governed by largely the same rules. ASA has its head buried as far as senior events go and this had a secondary effect on SSWS and ISSA, as both used its rule model. SPA ceased being the 'go to' event for M+ when they implemented their 'impact player' limitation. Really? Too many impact players for M+? This began in earnest when SSUSA decided to extend the 1.2 bat deadline and its competitors dropped to 98 mph bats (ASA mantra). The result for us (M+ teams) is the same minimal brackets plus we're forced to use 'rec type' rules. This is particularly so when playing M teams (or below). The pencil necks on the rules committee seem to rubber stamp the 'New Narrative'. This seems to work much more conveniently than the Senior Summit, an effort to consolidate the associations for mostly positive reasons. Now the 'higher ups' at SSUSA are to be commended for their vision and for many other positives. Each year we're told of how much bigger their tourneys are... but are they better? When you pay $700 (+ -) and play at Shadow Rock it has to be difficult to feel really good about the experience. Paying $575 and playing at Rancho San Rafael (1 of 3 days) also has little to recommend it. I'll feel better when quality is valued higher than quantity. As a part of a M+ team I'll also feel better when we can play real M+ ball. These two things won't happen voluntarily on SSUSA's part. Recognize that most of this diatribe is about the M+ experience, aside from the 'entry fee v. horse shit fields' part. So, no, the same old patches aren't a huge consideration for me. :-) BW |
| May 21, 2016 16wood | Topic: Product review Discussion: Best Batting Glove for Pratice I used to buy the Rawlings batting gloves with the heel pads... they only lasted so long until the pad came apart. For the past few years I've used either UA off the rack gloves (Big 5, Sports Auth, Sports Chalet, etc.) or have ordered Boombah gloves. Neither have the heel pads and both last longer... go figure. I've bought $30 gloves and they didn't last any longer than the $15 pairs... nor did they 'perform' any better. I use the same gloves in bp as in games... when they wear out I get more. They don't clean it, etc. I've seen lots of guys using the new Adidas, bal and end load, and it has a smooth finish... still hits knuckleballs... as does the Dudley and Reeboks... and others. Omar is 100% correct... if the magician is confident in his wand he'll perform better whether it offers a physical advantage or not. Most of softball is played between the ears. BW |

It can't be a '3rd strike foul out' until it hits the ground past the base or some other object (like a dugout fence or)... until then it's fly ball. If it's caught, it's ruled an F8, F10 or whatever. We've been playing with this rule for a really long time. In fact, we make a point of telling corner fielders to let it drop if there is a tag up possibility. If the fielder isn't certain that it's fair or foul, and no one tells him otherwise, he's supposed to catch it. Conversely, if it's a roller we tell the fielder to touch it in foul territory if he's in front of the base. That makes it an official K... if there were 2 strikes. This, too , has long been part of our general way of doing things. But the play that was described in the first post (by Dodger Don) has never happened in a game that I've witnessed... I've wondered how it would be called. BW |
| May 2, 2016 16wood | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Who is going to Reno? Steve, we went to Salem, OR, in 2006 for the USSSA Masters Tourney (55 M+). We had been told that there would be 4 teams in our division but 48 hours prior we learned that we were the only one... imagine our surprise... (-: Reno can be a great venue but not if there are only 3 teams. If we do hear from Ruth or Envirovac (and they'll be playing in the 65 M+ bracket) I'll do everything I can to sell our team on it. LV was a disappointment with just 2 teams, from my perspective... not to take anything away from your win. Your team played real well. BW |

But my info does not come from anyone on either of those teams. I would like to hear/read it from their managers or team reps. Reno is not a convenient location for many of our players and I would like to make a decision based on solid input. I received direct communication from the Old A's mgr and they'll be there (as you probably knew). BW |

But this bat came out in the spring of 2002 and only lasted until early August. They were banned 2 days before the 2002 USSSA Master's Tourney in Salem, OR. Following that, the Ultra II showed up in Phoenix for the SSUSA event (Oct of 2002). We used ASA bats in all the National Tourneys except for those two. I do not recall the Dudley Red Thunder being used... this isn't to say that they weren't. We played in USSSA, SSWS (aka NASCS) and SPA in 2002. Which assns are you speaking of? BW |
| March 16, 2016 16wood | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: face masks Swing: There was an LVSSA tourney in 2007 when a couple of balls went close to 500'... this was on a particular field at Lorenzi Park before it was reconfigured. It was the field facing southeast (for the most part)... and the wind was blowing pretty strong out to left center... This was clearly an exception, not the rule. You've been to Reno a zillion times perhaps and you know how the altitude and wind can 'change things'... that's how it was for that event in LV. The ball we used at that time in LVSSA may have been the Decker and it was, relatively speaking, much more lively than other balls that were stamped '44/375'... thus began Einstein's Theory... :-) BW |

Bruce tried to explain to you, Sparky, that what Ray calls 'Super Major' is what others call M+. Surely your vast experience as a scout would enable you to understand its meaning. If the scouting itself didn't, perhaps your hobknobbing with Howard's (and the like) would. Ray happens to be one of the very best M+ pitchers (65 M+ division) but isn't one to toot his own horn. Knowing Ray as I do, I'm guessing that he was simply stating that he's pitched to some of top hitters for a long time. Top hitters hit the ball hard and they don't always hit HRs... but as a top scout you'd know this. Sparky, this thread is about pitching masks. If you have something meaningful to offer on it, fire away... if you prefer to rag on the upper division you might want to open a new thread. But having played against the teams of the 70s that you mentioned (and those like Superior today) I have an extremely high level of respect for guys like Ray. Bob Woodroof |

Most pitchers do not pitch from the front of the box and, therefore, may be 60' from the batter. By the same token, few corner infielders play even with the base path. The difference in distance from the batter is less important than the anticipation of the infielder/pitcher. Being in the center of the diamond allows the pitcher to see/feel where the ball will be hit... most of the time... not every hitter follows form. Being a corner infielder does not afford you this luxury. The short reaction time in either position suggests that you really need to be 'on high alert'... with or without a mask. BW |
