G MAN - Denial seems to be our norm with some, when we have the tools to deal with Covid-19 and we refuse to use them. I hope all involved are in self isolation!

Discussion: 2020 WMC COVID-19 Update

Is there updated information?

Sept. 1, 2020

SACRAMENTO – Seventeen people on seven different teams have reported positive COVID-19 tests in the first session (55/60 men) of the 2020 LVSSA/SSUSA World Masters Championships (WMC).

Two cases have been reported in the second session (65-85 men) and no cases in the third session (40 Masters men and women). Only one of the cases has required hospitalization.

The first three sessions of the WMC attracted 315 teams and almost 10,000 players and their families.

The cases reported include:

Two players and a friend from a 60AA Colorado team.
Coach of a 60 AA Oklahoma team.
A pitcher from a 60AA team from Nevada.
A player from a 60 Major team from Minnesota.
A player, his wife, and daughter from a 55AAA Southern California team.
Seven players and the coach of a 55 and 60 Major-Plus teams from Texas. The initial player became ill on the second day of play. That player is being hospitalized with pneumonia.
A player from a 65 Major team from Nevada.
A player from a 65 Major-Plus team from California.
SSUSA officials said they were going to poll all managers next week from the first three sessions of the WMC to find out if there are any additional cases. In addition, we will be checking the condition of the reported cases. That updated report will appear in next week’s Newsletter.

All of the hotels in which the players stayed have been notified.

They Say You Can’t Fix Stupid Turns Out You Can’t Quarantine It Either!

"Using the label "Chinese Virus" will further inflame racial tensions in America. And it has nothing to do with public health, as experts have warned that relegating the disease to a geographic identity will actually hinder our efforts to contain it."

On March 10th "The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday that attaching Chinese to a description of the coronavirus was wrong after both President Trump and the top House Republican were accused of racism for labeling it.
“It’s absolutely wrong and inappropriate to call this the Chinese coronavirus, I assume you would agree with that,” Rep. Lois Frankel (D-Fla.) said to CDC chief Robert Redfield, who testified in the House on Tuesday morning.
Redfield said “yes,” noting the virus is also widespread in South Korea, Iran and Italy."

Discussion: Oh Boy!

The expressions “Chinese virus” and “Wuhan virus” personify the threat. Personification is metaphorical: its purpose is to help understand something unfamiliar and abstract (i.e. the virus) by using terms that are familiar and embodied (i.e. a location, a nationality or a person). But as cognitive linguists George Lakoff and Mark Johnson have long shown, metaphors are not just poetic tools, they are used constantly and shape our world view. The adjective “Chinese” is particularly problematic as it associates the infection with an ethnicity. Talking about group identities withan explicitly medical language is a recognized process of Othering (here and here), historically used in anti-immigrant rhetoric and policy, including toward Chinese immigrants in North America. This type of language stokes anxiety, resentment, fear and disgust toward people associated with that group.

Discussion: 2019 National Senior Games presented by Humana Boasts Record-High Athlete Attendance

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - New Mexico has 13,712 reasons to be excited this summer.

That’s the number of athletes age 50 and over who will compete in 20 medal sports at the 2019 National Senior Games presented by Humana taking place in Albuquerque June 14-25. This represents an all-time high participation in the 32-year history of The Games, exceeding its past record of 12,000 athletes tallied in 2007 by 14%. Even before this increase, the Olympic-style event was the largest multisport event in the world for seniors.

Cannabinoid pain relief could make the difference...

Cannabinoid pain relief may be the answer to the opioid epidemic, and since cannabis has never killed anyone, it will provide a safer alternative to opioids. Other studies report that opioid use declined in US states with medical cannabis programs, so cannabis may well be the painkiller of the future.
